Portal Coordinates and Linking

Updated Improve this page

For the X and Z axes, one block in the Nether corresponds to about eight blocks in the Overworld. To plan a portal, divide the Overworld X and Z by eight when travelling to the Nether, or multiply Nether X and Z by eight when returning. Y is not converted by the same rule.

For a single portal, use the center coordinates of the portal frame. With multiple portals, calculate from the center of the portal group or from each intended portal position, not from an arbitrary corner. A portal conversion tool such as maximumfx.nl/portal/en/ can help check the arithmetic.

When several portals are nearby, Minecraft searches for the closest valid portal in the destination dimension. Portals that are too close can link together unexpectedly. Keep intended pairs aligned, separate competing portals, and test each route from both dimensions after lighting the complete set.
